 Jumper Settings
 ===============

x = Jumpers are set from factory

The user MUST NOT change the setting of terminals not described in
this section. Do not connect or disconnect connectors or change
terminals except for CN3/CN9 when power is on!

Setting plugs and switch are set as follows when shipped from the
 factory:

 CN3 11-12, 13-14, 15-16
 CN5 4 ON, 5 ON
 CNH104 3-4

IDD connects to a position other than at either end of the SCSI cable
do not mount the terminating resistor modules on the IDD.

There are three possible installation directions, and the mounting
angle must be 5* from the horizontal.

Never install PCA to the top!

 Ambient temperature
 -------------------
When the IDD is operating, the ambient temperature measured 3 cm from
the Disk Enclosure (DE) surface and from the PCA surface must satisfy
 the specified requirements.

 Multi-drive connection
 ----------------------
Host systems, IDDs and other SCSI controllers are connected (daisy
chained) to SCSI provided that the total number of connected SCSI
devices is a maximum of eight.

 SCSI cable
 ----------
The total length of SCSI interface cable must be shorter than 7m.

A characteristic impedance of 100 10% is recommended for unshielded
twisted-pair ribbon cable. A characteristics impedance greater than
90 is preferred for shielded cable. A minimum conductor size of 28
AWG shall be employed. It is recommended that shielded cable be used
for connection outside of a cabinet.

To minimize discontinuities and signal reflections, cables of dif-
ferent impedance should not be used in the same bus. The maximum
cable length is 7m. 1m or more cable length is recommended between
 SCSI devices.

Check, that system power is off before connecting or disconnecting
 cables!

Be carefull of the insertion directions of the SCSI connectors. With
the system in which terminating resistor power is supplied via the
SCSI cable, if the drive power is turned on, the overcurrent protec-
tion fuse of the terminating resistor power supplier may be blown or
the cable may be burnt if overcurrent protection is not provided.

 Terminator
 ----------
All SCSI devices on one bus are daisy-chained with a SCSI cable. A
terminating resistor must be mounted in the SCSI device at each end
 of the SCSI cable.

Since a SCSI terminating resistor module is mounted in the IDD on
shipment, it must be removed when the IDD is not connected at either
end of the SCSI cable. Also, a method for the power supply to the
terminating resistor must be selected with the setting terminal on
 the IDD.

When connecting the IDD to either end of the SCSI cable, do not de-
 mount the terminating resistor module.
When connecting the IDD to a position other than both ends of the
SCSI cable, demount terminating resistor modules.

When removing the terminating resistor module from the socket, be
careful not to damage the resistor module pins, mount socket and
 contiguous parts.
When mounting the terminating resistor moudle, check the mounting
direction and wether the module is fixed.

 Sequential starting of spindle motors
 -------------------------------------
After the power is turned on to the IDD, a large amount of current
flows in the +12 V DC line when the spindle motor rotation starts.
Therefore, if more than one IDD is used, the spindle motors should
be started sequentially using one of the following procedures:

 1. Issue START/STOP UNIT commands at 20-second intervals to start
    the spindle motors.
 2. Turn on the +12 V DC power in the power supply unit at 30-second
intervals to start the spindle motors sequentially.

 Noise filter
 ------------
To eliminate AC line noise, a noise filter should be installed at the
AC input terminal on the IDD power supply unit.
Attenuation: 40 dB or more at 10 MHz.
 Circuit configuration: T type

 Operator panel connector
 ------------------------
The operator panel connector provides for optional connection of
 write protect switch.

 SCSI interface
 --------------
The interface between the host system and the IDD meets SCSI standard
The following extended features are also provided:

                 Arbitration
                 Disconnection/Reselection
Synchronous data transfer with 2.5MB/s transfer rate

 Command set
 -----------
All of SCSI mandatory commands and extended commands are provided and
the command set meets the SCSI CCS requirements. In addition, power-
ful Vendor Unique Commands have been provided to improve data hand-
 ling capability.
These commands can manipulate data through logical block addressing
independent of the physical characteristics of the IDD.

 Command queuing
 ---------------
IDD can accept multiple commands from multiple hosts.

 Data error correction
 ---------------------
If a recoverable error occurs, IDD attemps to recover errors from in-
side the IDD. Correctable data error can be corrected in the data
buffer so that error-free data can be transferred to the host system.

 Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
 ---------------------------------
The estimated MTBF of the IDD during its life time is 30.000 hours
 after an initial 3-month period.

 Mean Time To Repair (MTTR)
 --------------------------
MTTR is the average time taken by a well-trained service mechanic to
diagnose and repair a unit malfunction. IDD is designed for a MTTR
 of 30 minutes or less.

 Service life
 ------------
Overhaul of the drive is not required for the first five years.

 Power loss
 ----------
Integrity of the data of the disk is guaranteed against all forms of
abnormal DC power failure except a power failure during writing.

 Media defects
 -------------
Cylinder 0, Head 0 and 1 are error free.

 M2248S/SA/SB Fewer TBD
 M2249S/SA/SB Fewer TBD

The maximum defect length is 32 byte.

 Sector interleaving
 -------------------
Sector interleaving enables the data transfer rate required on SCSI
during read or write operation of continuous blocks to be decreased.

To use sector interleaving, the user must reformat the disk drive by
a Format Unit command. The Format Unit command permits a sector in-
terval between blocks to be specified as an interleaving factor. The
user need not be concerned with correspondences of blocks with their
physical sector locations, because any data access after the comple-
tion of formatting is performed in accordance with the block arran-
 gement.

In sector interleaving mode, the data blocks in a drive are accessed
at intervals of (m) sectors, where (m) is determined by the inter-
leaving factor. In read/write operations on continuouse blocks in the
sector interleaving mode, the data buffer helps decrease data trans-
fer rate required in SCSI. The data transfer rate in SCSI required
to maintain continuouse block processing without unexpected revolu-
tion delay when the interleaving factor is (m) can be determined by
 the following expression:
