                 README.TXT (DISK 2) --- INTRODUCTION
======================================================================

Congratulations on purchasing your new Adaptec AHA-3985/3985W
Multichannel PCI RAID Adapter. This board provides NetWare RAID
solutions with an unprecedented price/performance ratio.

NOTE: If you are having trouble booting your AHA-3985, please check
if your system motherboard provides PCI-PCI bridge support. The AHA-
3985 will not function in systems without bridge support. If you
believe your system does have bridge support, refer to the
'Troubleshooting Guide' in 3980NOTE.TXT

                            README File Map
======================================================================

The AHA-3985 diskettes contain several different README files relating
to different aspects of the product. The primary README is
3980NOTE.TXT, which is copied along with the NetWare drivers to the
DOS directory containing NetWare. The following guide may help you
locate information not in this readme:

Disk 1 - Adaptec Initial Array Configuration Utility
     A:\README.TXT Notes on running ARCONFIG.EXE to
                                   create arrays.

Disk 2 - AHA3980/3985 Drivers and RAID Utilities
     A:\README.TXT Notes on running INSTALL.EXE to
                                   copy drivers from floppy to hard
                                   disk. (This file)
     A:\DOS\3980DOS.TXT Notes on the included DOS ASPI and
                                   CD-ROM drivers.  This file is
                                   copied to the hard disk along with
                                   the CD-ROM drivers.
     A:\NETWARE\3980NOTE.TXT The primary README file including
                                   the troubleshooting guide.  This
                                   file is copied to the hard disk
                                   along with the NetWare drivers.
     A:\NETWARE\3980NW.TXT Notes on the NetWare drivers. This
                                   file is copied to the hard disk
                                   along with the NetWare drivers.

======================================================================
                      Adaptec Driver Copy Utility
                         INSTALL.EXE  (V1.51)
======================================================================

The Driver Copy Utility, INSTALL.EXE, assists in transferring
compressed driver files from Disk 2 to the hard disk.

CD-ROM drivers only need to be installed if DOS access to a CD-ROM
drive attached to the AHA-3985 is required. If NetWare is already
installed, or if the CD-ROM drive is not connected to the AHA-3985,
these drivers do not need to be copied or installed.

The default directory will be C:\SCSI, which is the same default
directory used by Adaptec EZ-SCSI provided with other Adaptec host
adapter products. A sample CONFIG.SYS and AUOTEXEC.BAT will be copied
along with the drivers.

NetWare drivers must be installed to access an array under NetWare.
Note that this utility only transfers the drivers to the DOS
partition. The NetWare Loadable modules will be transferred to the
NetWare SYS volume as part of the final installation process.

NetWare V3.11/V3.12 requires different drivers than NetWare V4.XX, so
you must indicate which version of NetWare is required. The utility
will search for SERVER.EXE in all the first-level directories of C:.
The directory containing SERVER.EXE becomes the default directory. If
SERVER.EXE is not found, the default directory name will be
\SERVER.312 or \NWSERVER, reflecting the default directory names of
the current NetWare installation utilities.

For more information on copying and installing drivers, see the
"User's Guide" Chapter 6

NOTE: If you are having problems running the DOS SETUP utility to
install DOS and have more than 8 drives connected, try creating the
array using ARCONFIG before installing DOS.

                         Upgrading from V1.0X
======================================================================

If you have existing AHA-3985 product that is at V1.00 or V1.01, you
can upgrade to full V1.50 functionality. This requires a new BIOS
PROM, available through Adaptec Technical Support. DO NOT INSTALL THE
DRIVERS FROM THIS DISKETTE ON TO A V1.0X AHA-3985 SYSTEM WITHOUT ALSO
UPGRADING THE BIOS PROM.

======================================================================
                         Upgrading from V1.50
======================================================================

If you have existing AHA-3985 product that is at V1.50, you can
upgrade to V1.51 for performance enhancements and bug fixs using this
same driver diskette. No BIOS PROM changes occurred between V1.50 and
V1.51.
