PCI adapter installation
                                                                    v1.01

Installing an EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100 Smart adapter
====================================================

1 Put the adapter in the computer.

2 Start the computer.

In most cases, the PCI computer automatically (and invisibly) configures
the adapter. If this doesn't happen, you may have to configure the
computer to work with the adapter. See the next section for details.

If you have problems
====================

Intel has found that some PCI computers require additional configuration
to install a PCI adapter. Follow these steps to complete the
installation:

1 Make sure you have the latest BIOS version for your computer.

2 Make sure the BIOS is set up correctly.

3 If you use EMM386.EXE and want to run SETUP.EXE, make sure you have
   v4.49 or later.

The following sections describe these steps in detail.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS version
------------------------------------------

Contact your computer's manufacturer to make sure you're using the latest
BIOS. Here are the phone numbers for the top PCI computer manufacturers:

Make sure the BIOS is set up correctly
--------------------------------------

In some PCI computers, you may need to enable the PCI slot using the BIOS
Setup program. This is especially common in PCI computers with Phoenix
BIOSs.

After installing the adapter, turn on the computer and enter the BIOS
Setup program during system initialization (usually by pressing F1, F2,
or Ctrl-Alt-S). The key you press is usually shown on the screen.

Once in BIOS Setup, find the entry for PCI slots. Set these parameters:

PCI Slot#: Slot where the adapter is installed (1-3)
   Master: ENABLED
   Slave: ENABLED
   Latency Timer: 40
Interrupt: Choose any one of several that the BIOS Setup provides.
   Edge-level: Level

The exact wording of the parameters varies with computers.

Save the changes, exit BIOS Setup, and continue with the installation.

Make sure you have EMM386.EXE v4.49 or later
--------------------------------------------

If you're trying to run SETUP.EXE in a computer that uses an Extended
Memory Manager (EMM386.EXE), make sure you have version 4.49 or later.

During testing, we found that earlier versions of EMM386 can cause your
computer to hang. This shouldn't be a problem since the EtherExpress
PRO/100 Smart adapter is a server adapter and most servers don't use
EMM386.
