EISA Configuration Utility (ECU) is utilized for storing and extracting initialization information that is used for initializing system boards and expansion boards.

This information is stored in non-volatile memory and by POST to initialize system resources automatically at system startup, and a backup file will be generated on diskette with a suffix ".sci", whenever the information is saved.

The ECU needs to be run under one of the following conditions:
- the system is new and unconfigured
- the system has been modified by adding, removing, or changing memory or adapter cards
- the configuration information stored in non-volatile memory has been corrupt or deleted

When you need to configure a new system when adding or removing adapter cards, you will have to refer to the ECU User's Guide. Every EISA adapter needs to have a configuration file supplied with it (a .cfg file). The name of configuration file for the 486-VE-V motherboard is !FIC0000.CFG.
